Zwolle, the capital of Overijssel, is an old Hanseatic city whose centre is ringed by canals, with the Sassenpoort gate and plenty of historic buildings. It is big enough for good facilities yet easy to find your way around.
Students at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences and Viaa look for rooms and studios here. Young professionals and families make up a large share of renters as well. Assendorp, close to the centre, is a popular neighbourhood with older homes and a character of its own. Stadshagen is a large newer district with many family houses. Zwolle station is a key rail hub for the north and east of the country. The Hanzelijn links it to Lelystad and Almere, and trains run to Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Leeuwarden and Enschede.
