Philips shaped Eindhoven, and technology still defines the city. The wider region is known as Brainport, with employers such as ASML in neighbouring Veldhoven, and that brings engineers and expats from all over the world. Add the students of Eindhoven University of Technology, Fontys University of Applied Sciences and the Design Academy Eindhoven, and you get a young, international renting population.

Strijp-S, a former Philips industrial site, has been turned into a district of lofts, apartments, offices and creative workspaces. The city centre is compact, and most places are within cycling distance. For more room, renters look at Woensel in the north, or at Stratum and Gestel, which have many family houses. Trains from Eindhoven Centraal run to Den Bosch, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Tilburg and Venlo, and Eindhoven Airport is on the edge of the city.

If your employer provides temporary housing when you arrive, start looking for your next place well before it ends. Moving at short notice is stressful here. Always ask whether you can register at the address with the municipality.
