Just northwest of Amsterdam, Zaandam is the largest town in the municipality of Zaanstad and lies along the river Zaan. The Zaan region has a long industrial history, with green wooden houses, windmills and factories along the water. The Zaanse Schans is also in Zaanstad.

The banks of the Zaan are pleasant for cycling, and open countryside starts not far outside town.
