In the far south of the country, Maastricht sits on the Maas with Belgium and Germany close by. The old centre is compact and walkable, full of narrow streets and café terraces, and it feels different from cities further north.

Maastricht University attracts a large international student body, and Zuyd University of Applied Sciences adds more students. Rooms and small flats in old buildings are common in the city centre and the Jekerkwartier. Wyck, across the river near the station, is popular with young renters. Céramique, along the Maas, is a newer district with more apartment buildings. Randwyck is home to the academic hospital and several university buildings, so students and hospital staff often look there.

Trains connect Maastricht with Sittard, Heerlen and the rest of the Netherlands, and there is a direct train to Liège. Aachen is close as well.
