Leiden revolves around its university. Leiden University, the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and the Leiden Bio Science Park shape much of the population, so you will meet many students, PhD candidates, researchers and people working in life sciences. The old centre is a web of canals and narrow streets, and many of its historic houses are split into student rooms.

For a self-contained apartment or a family home, renters often look outside the centre, in the Merenwijk, Leiden-Noord or the Stevenshof. Oegstgeest, just north of the city, is popular with families. The location is convenient. From Leiden Centraal, trains go to The Hague, Haarlem, Amsterdam and Schiphol, and within Leiden the bike is the easiest way to get around.

The centre mostly offers rooms and small studios rather than full apartments. If you need a room for September, start looking in spring. Many student houses pick new housemates at a viewing evening called a hospiteeravond, so send a personal message and be ready to visit.
