The largest city in Twente, Enschede lies right by the German border. It was once a textile town and now runs largely on education, technology and healthcare. Life moves at a calmer pace than in the Randstad, and green space is never far away.
The University of Twente has a campus on the edge of the city, and many students live there. Saxion University of Applied Sciences brings in many more, and ArtEZ has a branch here too. Thanks to the university, the city has a large community of international students and researchers. In and around the centre you mostly find rooms and apartments. Roombeek, north of the centre, was rebuilt after the fireworks disaster and now has a lot of newer housing with striking architecture.
Trains run to Hengelo, Deventer and on towards the west of the country, and there is also a line to Münster in Germany. Around town and to campus, most people cycle. For students it helps to know that, as in other Dutch student cities, many rooms are let through viewing evenings where the current housemates choose. Reply quickly and introduce yourself properly.
