Set on the Rhine at the edge of the Veluwe forests, Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland. It is greener and hillier than most Dutch cities, and Sonsbeek park begins a short walk from the centre.

Close to the centre, the Spijkerkwartier and Klarendal have older houses and a mixed population, from young professionals to artists. Klarendal is known locally as a fashion quarter, with studios and small shops. South of the river, Arnhem-Zuid has more modern housing and family homes. Students come for HAN University of Applied Sciences and for ArtEZ, the art school. The grid operator TenneT has its head office here, and the energy sector is an important employer.

Arnhem Centraal has trains to Nijmegen, Utrecht and beyond, and the ICE to Germany stops here too. Many residents commute to Nijmegen or Utrecht. Cycling around town is common, though the hills on the north side take some effort.
