Almere is a young city, built on land reclaimed from the water in the Flevoland polder. As a result, most of the housing is relatively new, with plenty of single-family homes with gardens, wide streets and separate cycle paths. The Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve and the lakeshore are never far away.

The city is divided into districts. Almere Stad is the centre, with the shops, the Weerwater lake and most of the apartments. Almere Haven, the oldest district, sits on the Gooimeer. Almere Buiten, Almere Poort and Almere Hout have many family houses. Families and commuters working in Amsterdam or Utrecht are the typical renters, drawn by the extra space. Trains run to Amsterdam and Utrecht, and local buses use their own dedicated lanes across the city.

When you compare listings, look at the district and the nearest station. Almere has several railway stations, and if you commute by train every day, living close to one of them makes a real difference.
